The beginning of life on earth

The sea here is shallow enough give us second thoughts about swimming this morning – although warmer at Kalbarri than Jurien Bay it was on the chilly side and the stiff wind was off-putting.  After an enjoyable paddle we noticed the jellyfish on the beach so maybe not swimming was a good choice.

There are lots of enormous pelicans here.

We rented a motorboat and pootled up the Murchison river – very serene although our engine was loud. We saw 2 eagles – a fish eagle and another ‘wedgie’. And 3 herons: the great egret – an enormous white thing- a grey egret and a white-faced heron – all out fishing.

The fish jump out of the water – amazing there are any left with so many huge pelicans- they can eat 1.2kg a day & I wonder how they get off the ground.

All packed it was back on the road to Monkey Mia under sunny Australian skies – the roads are straight and empty with striking and beautiful bush on either side – flowering white & green with flashes of yellow and red.

Drivers coming the other way wave hello – and we had to pull over for a wide load.

We entered the World Heritage Shark Bay Drive!

We stopped to see the stromatolites at Hamelin pool – they are survivors from 3 & a half billion years ago: mats of bacterial ecosystems that were the first organisms to photosynthesise and generated the oxygen into our atmosphere to allow life to evolve.

On the road into Monkey Mia (not Mamma Mia as I keep mis-calling it & it’s Mia rhyming with higher) we saw a family of Emus right by the road & finally a kangaroo going boing boing boing 🙂

  1. This is so awesome, beautiful, interesting and so exciting experience.
This makes me believe that nature is beautiful and we should preserve the environment to enjoy it’s beauty.
