This island was named in 1802 by Matthew Flinders who was desperately in need of fresh food for his sailors.
He thought he saw men on the shore and decided to stop to ask for help. When they got ashore they realised they weren’t men, they were kangaroos.

That’s the more humble name for the South Australian coastal highway.
We waved a fond farewell to Peter, Karen and the farm and drove on to Victor Harbor. We had to take a picture of this giant lobster, it’s a cafe and is for sale!

Back on the road today heading to Port Fairy.
We stopped at the Gibson Steps and climbed down to the yellow sands to enjoy the crashing rollers and see our first ‘apostles’. David was very impressed with the lovely waves. Later we discovered that these stacks are Gog and Magog.
We enjoyed a decent 22km walk today.
We started with pleasant coastal views – up and down undulations very like Devon. There are brambles (they are trying to get rid of them – good luck!) among the hedges & I’m sure there was some hawthorn in the bracken.

Heading out of Melbourne after a terrorist attack (luckily we were seeing Annie); getting into a traffic jam on the M1, we are now hoping re-find Australia on the Great Ocean Road.
We were very excited to meet up with David’s cousin Annie and her daughter Mika. The last time we saw Annie was 20 years ago! It was wonderful to see her again and meet Mika for the first time.
So here we staying on the south bank of the Yarra river, surrounded by art centres and bars and restaurants.
This evening we walked at the base of Uluru – it was stormy and raining heavily to begin with. This is rare here where there is only 30cm of rain a year.
This morning we did the Valley of the Winds walk – an easy 7km round walk at Kata Tjuta.
