Unfortunately the first two walks were closed due to the season &#8211; not sure if this was because of the heat (up to 39C) or the impending wet when everything is flooded.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAfter a bit of a 4WD drive we found Sandy Billabong which was quiet and serene with lots of water birds and the occasional kangaroo hopping across our path. This time of year we have the place to ourself which is a boon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" title=\"NT \/ Australia - 10\/23\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181023T075358GMT0930-1536x318.jpg\" alt=\"NT \/ Australia - 10\/23\/18\" width=\"1536\" height=\"318\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the way back we stopped at the Aboriginal cultural center which was very well done showing both their deep history and the more recent history of Kakadu park which is owned and run by the traditional owners. No photos of this as they were not permitted.<\/p>\n<p>After the long day in the heat yesterday we were both tired and so rested at the excellent Cooinda lodge where the pool beckoned. A pied heron joined us:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"10\/23\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181023T162115GMT0930.jpg\" alt=\"10\/23\/18\" width=\"773\" height=\"1032\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just before sunset we walked to Yellow river and a bit more bird watching. Eleanor saw a drongo, a family of beautiful blue cheeked honey eaters and the great bower bird (sounds impressive for a medium brown bird)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" title=\"10\/23\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181023T215022GMT0930-1536x1152.jpg\" alt=\"10\/23\/18\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1152\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cooinda Lodge is a great place to stay with good cabin rooms (with aircon), friendly staff, and particularly good food &#8211; the best we have had in the Top End.
