Quite a contrast to the billabong.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to say a bit about where we are staying: By the Sea, Port Douglas is run by \u2018the girls\u2019 who have thought of everything. You can borrow beach towels, deckchairs of 3 varieties, umbrellas, inflatables, dvds, board games, bikes and there\u2019s a laundry. There are a lot of exclusive looking resorts back from the beach &#8211; but I really don\u2019t think they can offer half as much!<\/p>\n<p>First of all we caught up on our washing(!) and borrowed bikes and headed for \u2018breakfast with the birds\u2019 at the wildlife sanctuary 4 km down the road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T093325GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1349\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was lots to see including lovely finches, black cockatoos, cassowaries,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"BIRU-WP-20181027T091222GMT1000.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T091222GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"BIRU-WP-20181027T091222GMT1000.jpg\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1152\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T102117GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1151\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>but my highlight was scratching a very happy kangaroo or large wallaby &#8211; I still don\u2019t know the difference: apparently it\u2019s to do with foot size but there are some wallabies who also have big feet!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T100536GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1117\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is also a type of wallaby called a nail-tail because they have a nail just like a toe nail at the end of their tail! Very strange and they don\u2019t know why!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T094747GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1148\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We felt sorry for the tree kangaroo who seemed trapped &#8211; the koalas were all drugged or stuffed,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T104000GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" width=\"1449\" height=\"1536\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the crocs looked a bit small from what we are used to &#8211; but the birds were very happy with lots of room and they have successfully bred Jabiru. This is a wierd bird: a red-eyed frogmouth<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.holloway.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BIRU-WP-20181027T092536GMT1000.jpg\" alt=\"Port Douglas \/ QLD \/ Australia - 10\/27\/18\" width=\"1152\" height=\"1536\" data-json=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They are also trying to save the gouldian finch with a breeding program.<\/p>\n<p>We cycled back not needing lunch after our big breakfast!
